Roll Out the Red Carpet

Roll Out the Red Carpet
written by Steven Barrymore

I walked into the lobby of the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, California with Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin is alive and well, portrayed by Robert Martin. Robert has been performing the Chaplin character for over 10 15 years in San Francisco for visitors from around the world, and was featured in a local cable commercial promoting the April 16-19, 2009 11th Annual California Independent Film Festival (CIFF) in Livermore.

Kids and adults mingled with Charlie during the reception to have their picture taken, or just to chat. I must say, Charlie in his red jacket was a standout winner. The mayor of Livermore, Marshall Kamena, even made a sandwich for Charlie.

Charlie and I were in attendance as guests to the opening night reception and viewing of How To Be, an independent film directed by Oliver Irving starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight fame).

How To Be is a lenghty roller coaster ride about a young man, Arthur, (Robert Pattinson) trying to cope with emotionally distant parents (Rebecca Pidgeon and Michael Irving) while exploring ambitions as a singer songwriter. There are comic shades of Woody Allen with Mr. Pattinson’s clothing pulled from the wardrobe closet of the 1971 film classic Harold and Maude. The film is a bit choppy during some scene transitions, but over all should be a good DVD rental.

Before the film presentation, two posters signed by Pattinson were auctioned off to support CIFF. There was even an appearance by Wavy Gravy (best known as the “official clown” of the Grateful Dead). The film’s writer-director Oliver Irving and composer Joe Hastings held a Q and A session after the viewing. Pattinson was not in attendance.

The Amicus Brief

The Amicus Brief
written by Steven Barrymore

The words Amicus Brief, read like an action movie title. And there is plenty of action swirling around California’s Proposition 8 (same sex marriage). The opponents, 40 law firms and other interested parties, to California Proposition 8 have filed an Amicus Brief with the California Supreme Court. An Amicus Brief is one of those legal terms “literally translated as friend of the court, that refers to someone, not a party to a case, who volunteers to offer information on a point of law or some other aspect of the case to assist the court in deciding a matter before it.” (1)

Some big players have entered into the fray of Amicus Brief filers, including Google. Google filed a joint brief along with the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce, H5 and Levi Strauss. Google’s portion of the filing states “Google believes that all of its employees deserve fundamental civil rights, and that when employees are harmed, businesses suffer”. A pdf version of the joint brief filing can be found at The National Center for Lesbian Rights NCLR.

God speaks, or so is said

The internet is all a buzz. Apparently a religious organization, Kingdom of Heaven World Divine Mission, has filed an Amicus Brief with the California Supreme Court on behalf of the Almighty Eternal Creator (a.k.a. God) in favor of Proposition 8. I have seen a few web links to this filing, but unfortunately these links lead to a Sorry, the page you requested was not found page on the California Courts website. Bummer, and I wanted to read God’s words.

The mind wanders

What is wrong with same sex marriage. If two people love and respect each other, then allow them the right to marriage. Drugs, sex, rock and roll are the main influence on children, not who is getting married to whom.

But there is a limit. I am not for people marrying domestic pets. Mainly for the following reasons. Dogs are just too lazy. They lay around and don’t get involved in running a household. And cats. Ask a cat to do something and you are promptly given the paw.

Proposition 8 is no joke. Both sides to this are going to have a lot to write about and say in the years to come. It ain’t over yet, and when the full figured lady sings, it still won’t be over.

And as for my own involvement in this? I have created a line of support items for you to wear, drink out of and adorn your car with. Perhaps a Supreme Court justice will be in their car behind you in traffic and glance at your new Proposition 8 bumper sticker. The statement made may be of influence.

Proposition 8 statement items

May 26, 2009 Update: The California Supreme Court, by a 6-1 vote, rejects challenges to Prop. 8. “The court also unanimously held that the new constitutional provision applies only prospectively, and does not affect the continued validity of the estimated 18,000 marriages of same-sex couples that occurred prior to November 5, 2008″, reported in the California Courts news release. The news release (pdf format) can be viewed at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/presscenter/newsreleases/NR29-09.PDF on the California Courts website.

More states are legalizing same sex marriage, with even more states exploring the possibility of legalization. Will this decision be the end to the same sex marriage battle in California?

March 03, 2009 Update: The California Supreme Court will hear oral arguments in the case of Proposition 8 – ban on same sex marriage. The hearing can be viewed online at http://www.courtinfo.ca.gov/
courts/supreme/highprofile/prop8viewing.htm
starting at 9:00 AM Pacific Time March 05, 2009. The hearing will be held at Earl Warren Building, 350 McAllister Street, San Francisco, CA, doors open at 7:30 a.m. on March 5. Only 20 public seats will be available in the courtroom. A historic event for California and the nation.

Why California Recycled 80% of Glass and the Rest of the U.S. 30%

Why California Recycled 80% of Glass and the Rest of the U.S. 30%
Evidence that Nickle and Dime Deposits Work

By Dan Shapley

California is on pace to recycle nearly 80% of the glass introduced into commerce in 2008, according to the latest statistics — up from 71% in 2007.

Meanwhile, while the U.S. rate of glass recycling is increasing — to 28% in 2007 from 25% — it lags far behind the rate in California.

Why?

According to the Glass Packaging Institute, the industry group for glass container makers, it all has to do with those nickle and dime deposits some states place on glass containers. (That, and targeted initiatives in some states, like Colorado and North Carolina, to require bars and restaurants to do a better job recycling their customer’s detritus.)

Evidence: glass beer and soft drink bottles, which are the most likely to have bottle deposits, were recycled nationally at a rate of 34.5% in 2007 (up from 30.7% in 2006). The rate of recycling for wine and liquor bottles, meanwhile, remained flat at 15%.

The figures also reinforce the notion that bottle deposits on additional beverage categories would make a world of difference in increasing recycling rates, and decreasing landfill clogging. Most beverage deposit laws were passed in the 1970s when carbonated beverages — beer and soda — dominated the industry. Now, bottled water, iced tea, energy drinks and other non-carbonated beverages are major players, but customers buying them aren’t charged a deposit, and so are given no incentive to redeem them for cash when they’ve finished drinking them.

In some states, like in New York, expansions of the bottle bill have been held up for year by political bickering and lobbying by various factions of the beverage and grocery industries. Reports like these remind us why that lobbying has to be defeated by common sense. There’s no reason all glass can’t be recycled, or why plastic beverage containers of all stripes shouldn’t be given a second life … and a third and fourth and …

About GPI The Glass Packaging Institute (GPI) is the trade association representing the North American glass container industry. Through GPI, glass container manufacturers speak with one voice to advocate industry standards, promote sound environmental policies and educate packaging professionals.
