A Story Into The Night
written by Steven Barrymore
Enjoying the Lunar Eclipse on this clear night. What an amazing sight it is.
My friend, Dave, contacts me with an emergency situation. The neighbor is hysterical. Dave said that a car hit her cat. I ask which cat since the neighbor has several. It was the younger white and black spotted cat. Dave wanted me to go with him to the neighbor’s house. I joined Dave and we walked to the house, with gloves in hand. I had visions of finding a mangled cat that we would have to bag and bury.
When we arrive, we enter the neighbor’s bedroom to find her lying on the bed with hands cradling the cat. The neighbor was crying; the palms of her hands lovingly holding the cat. I looked closer to see that the cat was moving. It is alive. Blood was all over the bedding. The neighbor looks up in tears and says “her (the cat’s) kidney is lying on the bed.” Dave gets a paper towel and picks up this item; it looked like fecal material. He takes the item away for disposal. He then comes back in the bedroom, showing the material in the paper towel and states “look, it is just a bloody hairball.” He turns to walk away, then turns back. Holding out and opening the paper towel he took away earlier. “Look at this,” he says. I looked closer. “It is a baby.” Dave stated in shock. It was a dead baby kitten. The neighbor’s cat was having a miscarriage. As soon as my friend took the dead baby kitten away, the cat had another miscarriage. It appeared the cat had not been pregnant too long. The baby kittens were not well developed. It was not the cat’s time to be a mommy cat.
Over the past few months I have had times where ‘it was not time’ for an event to happen. No matter how much effort I put into the event. It never materialized. The maturation of events is at times beyond our control.
February 22, 2008 Update: Dave informed me that the neighbor took the cat to a veterinarian. I am sorry to inform everyone that the cat past away. It appeared to the veterinarian, from an x-ray exam, that the cat was hit by a car and had a miscarriage due to trauma. This was very saddening.
