I walked into the lobby of the Bankhead Theater in Livermore, California with Charlie Chaplin. Mr. Chaplin is alive and well, portrayed by Robert Martin. Robert has been performing the Chaplin character for ~~over 10~~ 15 years in San Francisco for visitors from around the world, and was featured in a local cable commercial promoting the April 16-19, 2009 11th Annual California Independent Film Festival (CIFF) in Livermore.

Kids and adults mingled with Charlie during the reception to have their picture taken, or just to chat. I must say, Charlie in his red jacket was a standout winner. The mayor of Livermore, Marshall Kamena, even made a sandwich for Charlie.

Charlie and I were in attendance as guests to the opening night reception and viewing of How To Be, an independent film directed by Oliver Irving starring Robert Pattinson (Twilight fame).

How To Be is a lenghty roller coaster ride about a young man, Arthur, (Robert Pattinson) trying to cope with emotionally distant parents (Rebecca Pidgeon and Michael Irving) while exploring ambitions as a singer songwriter. There are comic shades of Woody Allen with Mr. Pattinson’s clothing pulled from the wardrobe closet of the 1971 film classic Harold and Maude. The film is a bit choppy during some scene transitions, but over all should be a good DVD rental.

Before the film presentation, two posters signed by Pattinson were auctioned off to support CIFF. There was even an appearance by Wavy Gravy (best known as the “official clown” of the Grateful Dead). The film’s writer-director Oliver Irving and composer Joe Hastings held a Q and A session after the viewing. Pattinson was not in attendance.
